Did you know that “Tahiti” is used to refer to the entire country of French Polynesia, but Tahiti is also the name of the main island in French Polynesia? The island of Tahiti is where the action happens- it’s the country’s hub for business, it’s where the major airport is located, and it’s where most of the residents of the country live. It’s because of these things that the island of Tahiti is often overlooked. When spending thousands of dollars to escape to paradise, you typically don’t want to stay in an area that is busy and built up. However, Tahiti is much more than its capitol, Papeete, and the place to stay on the island is the InterContinental Tahiti Resort.
The InterContinental Tahiti Resort is a large property, with 253 rooms spread over 8 buildings, each with three levels. The 8 buildings consist of what we envision as “normal” hotel rooms- standard rooms, garden view rooms, lagoon view rooms, and panoramic view rooms. The view from the panoramic rooms look out over the lagoon toward the island of Moorea. It’s a spectacular view and one of the best views on the island of Tahiti. The property also has 30 overwater bungalows and 1 overwater suite. The Motu overwater bungalows have recently been torn down and rebuilt to make them more modern and luxurious. They are slated to open in August 2015. Meanwhile, the Lagoon overwater bungalows are in a more private part of the resort and set out over deeper water. While we think saving your overwater bungalow stay for the outer islands is the best approach, if you cannot afford to stay in one elsewhere, definitely consider staying in one at the InterContinental. It’s a great way to experience the much sought after accommodations at a lower cost.
A special feature of the Intercontinental is its pool area. The resort has two fresh water infinity pools with a swim up bar. The pools are very frequently photographed and you may recognize it just from the photos below!
The InterContinental also offers an authentic Polynesian experience, unlike many of the other resorts on the main island. In addition to all of the authentic touches among the resort grounds and rooms, the InterContinental’s weekend Polynesian shows are among the best in the country! We had the opportunity to see a Polynesian show at the InterContinental, as part of a private group, that was beyond amazing. The attention to detail was incredible. The resort also offers nightly live entertainment in it’s main gourmet restaurant, Lotus. Lotus happens to be one of the best restaurants on the island, so you are spoiled with top caliber food and entertainment.
Tahiti is reached via international flight on Air Tahiti Nui or Air France from Los Angeles International Airport. Upon arrival, land transfers to the InterContinental can be arranged by your travel agent. The resort is only two miles from the airport. We highly recommend a stay at InterContinental Tahiti Resort if you are looking for an authentic resort close to shopping and the downtown area. A stay at the InterContinental can be as short as one night to allow you to connect with an interisland flight the next day or for 2-3 nights to allow you to explore the main island. It pairs well with any resort combination on the outer islands as resorts on the main island are often booked solely for transit purposes.
